Prepare for space weather

Space weather refers to several types of eruptions of radiation and plasma from the Sun that affect space near Earth and Earth’s magnetic field. These effects can damage, disrupt, or disturb power, communication, transportation, and satellite systems. Canada is more affected by space weather than other countries because space weather effects are larger and more common at higher latitudes.

Why prepare for space weather

Space weather affects the public indirectly through its effects on energy, communication, navigation and transportation systems. The most serious consequences of a space weather event are power and communication failures. Major disturbances have caused widespread effects on power systems such as a complete blackout of the Hydro-Québec power system that left six million residents of Québec without power for nine hours in the winter of 1989.
